High Court Judge – Judge Segopotje Sheila Mphahlele – Mpumalanga Division of the High Court

This week on Womanity – Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to High Court Judge Segopotje Sheila Mphahlele – from the Mpumalanga division of the High Court. We reflect on strategies that reduce gender bias in recruitment processes, such as the inclusion of women on selection panels. Judge Mphahlele reflects on former International Development Law Organisation’s Director-General Irene Khan statement, “The quality of justice for women improves when women are not only consumers of justice, but also providers of justice”, and the need to increase the number of female judges in South Africa. In our discussion about gender equality Judge Mphahlele considers the influencing effects that parents have on shaping children’s attitudes of women and men and through a paradigm shift that focuses on both girls and boys to help evolve society towards a more egalitarian one. We consider education as an enabler and Judge Mphahlele goes further to describe it as a liberator, which frees women from being dependent on others, and potentially remaining in abusive relationships because they lack the means to stand on their own.
