Professor Fiona Tregenna – DST/NRF South African Research Chair in Industrial Development – Professor of Economics at the University of Johannesburg

This week on Womanity-Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to Professor Fiona Tregenna who holds the DST/NRF South African Research Chair in Industrial Development, and is a Professor of Economics at the University of Johannesburg. Professor Tregenna shares how her commitment to social justice stemming from early activism and interest in politics motivated her to pursue her studies in economics with real world implications. The economic domain is a fundamental pillar in productive societies. We discuss aspects of Prof. Tregenna’s research, which focusses on structural change, deindustrialisation and industrial development and apply it in the context of the African continent and women’s empowerment. She notes one of the benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area through regional and continental integration is building up economies of scale through porous borders. Attaining gender equality requires a multi-pronged approach, which interconnects factors such as: legal, economic, cultural and economics. Prof. Tregenna reminds us that structuring of fiscal budgets and prioritizing gender mainstreaming within government departments across local and national spheres is one mechanism that can help accelerate change towards gender equality for faster gains.
