This week we are joined by Patricia Colbert, Senior Gender Advisor – UN World Food Programme and Leigh Hildyard, Regional Gender and Protection Advisor for Southern Africa – UN World Food Programme. We discuss some of the complexities of humanitarian aid, from determining vulnerable groups in crisis stricken communities to securing donor funding. We highlight projects, like the World Food Programme School Feeding project, which tries to improve education prospects for girls and the Purchase for Progress pilot, which aims to advance the commercial prospects of smallholder farmers, especially women. We consider the importance of women in leadership, across private and public sectors, to ensure that women’s needs are priorities and recognise that the women who occupy positions of power are role models that inspire other women to achieve their personal goals.
