This week we talk to the University of South Africa (UNISA) Women’s Forum Chairperson Dr. Marinkie Madiope. We discuss the merits and flexibility of distance learning institutions as well as the use of e-learning tools to educate and empower individuals, extending from urban to rural environments. Both formal and informal forms of education are key enablers to empower women; contributing to self-development – building confidence and assertiveness; or economic independence via entrepreneurial skills and the ability to access resources. We address the role of the UNISA Women’s forum to promote women issues and afford women opportunities to learn from role models, and the future of this forum to broaden its mandate to service female stakeholders in the wider UNISA community.
