2016 Women in Science Awards: Prof Ngila and Prof Akinlabi

This week we talk to two pioneering University of Johannesburg researchers, who were recently honoured at the 2016 Women in Science Awards – Professor Catherine Ngila and Professor Esther Akinlabi. We discuss changes in the demographic composition of the technology and science arena, with increasing representation of women in both the professional and academic space. They share their motivation for pursuing careers in science, which stemmed from excelling academically as a means to escape poverty and cultural constraints that were imposed on girls and women in rural areas. However, women still lag behind in senior management, we address the need for women to believe in themselves more, to compete, to own their success and nominate themselves for top positions.
