Justice Mandisa Maya: Judge President of the Supreme Court of Appeal

This week we are joined by South Africa’s first female Judge President of the Supreme Court of Appeal, Justice Mandisa Maya. We discuss her role and intent to diversify the bench to ensure that women are adequately represented in the South African judiciary. Justice Maya raises concerns that globally women still do not receive equal treatment in the work place, particularly in regard to pay and position, even if they are more qualified than their male counterparts. She mentions that legislation in South Africa, like the Employment Equity Act, exists to counter these types of injustices and emphasizes that people must use the courts for vindication.
