Vice Chancellor: Nelson Mandela University – Prof. Sibongile Muthwa

This week on Womanity – Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to Prof. Sibongile Muthwa, the Vice Chancellor of Nelson Mandela University. Prof. Muthwa highlights a few of the institution’s strategic plans from transforming curricula content to increasing research outputs as well as promoting demographic diversity of its cohort of researchers. She also introduces a flagship project to retrace Nelson Mandela’s footsteps in Africa via academic alliances with countries that supported South Africa in its struggle years. We discuss what it means to be African in the space of knowledge creation, and stamping Africa’s contribution on the academic map. Prof. Muthwa shares her experience of the fees must fall movement and resulting learnings leading to greater student-centricity and inclusion at all points in the university’s value chain. We look at avenues to groom female leadership, such as identifying and supporting young women with promise to instill self belief and leapfrog hurdles to accelerate their access to opportunities.
