Dean of the Faculty of Science at Stellenbosch University – Prof. Louise Warnich

This week on Womanity – Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to Prof. Louise Warnich, the Dean of the Faculty of Science at Stellenbosch University. We discuss some of the recent innovations emanating from various science departments housed in the faculty, such as addressing biological invasions that challenge our bio-diversity, studying populations of great white sharks and developing safe shark barriers to protect beaches. These endeavours have an impact on the real-world, which is part of the institution’s ethos to equip students with skills like critical thinking, lifelong learning and collaboration to enable them to participate and lead in the future #4IR world of work. Prof Warnich shares some of her experiences as a scientist and her research in the field of genomics. We discuss interventions from bursaries to events and flexible schedules that help promote the participation of women in science.  We note the need for programmes that develop leadership qualities in women, the importance of role models and mentors and to provide these tools to girls as they are starting to consider career and life options.
