Head of School of Geoscience at WITS University – Prof. Gillian Drennan

This week on Womanity – Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to Professor Gillian Drennan, Head of School of Geoscience at WITS University.  She is a member of the Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA) and the International Geoscience Education Organization (IGEO) and also serves as Chairperson for the Museum Consultative Committee as well as the Geological Museum Association, Museum Africa. We discuss some of the applications of the earth sciences encompassing fields of geology, mining geology, geochemistry and palaeontology amongst others. Prof. Drennan highlights some of the research the department has embarked on and collaborations with countries like Japan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Ivory Coast, remarking how older technology is being repurposed and put into new contexts as well as identifying new applications for older minerals in our changing world.  We discuss the fact that there are more women than men enrolled at undergraduate level to study GeoScience, which is a marked change from when Prof. Drennan undertook her academic studies. We consider how employers can create conducive environments that enable people to reach their full potential and be able to fulfil both their personal and professional goals. We contemplate to transition into a more egalitarian society and considered the role that attitude and culture play in this change. Tune in for more….
