This week we talk to Ambassador Elisabeth Barbier, who is the Ambassador of France to South Africa. We reflect on the progress of women’s rights globally and on a country specific level, comparing, for instance, South Africa’s Women Empowerment and Gender Equality legislation, which aims for 50:50 parity, to France’s goal to achieve quotas of 40% women on the boards of companies nationwide by 2017. We consider some of the interventions applied to encourage more women to remain in the workforce and achieve better balance between home and work responsibilities – such as flexi-hours, working from home, using mobility devices…We stress the importance of education and encouraging girls to think big and not confine themselves to gender stereotype careers.
