This week we are joined by Ms Machwene Rosina Semenya – Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Member of Parliament for the African National Congress (ANC). We discuss some of the responsibilities of the committee, such as collaborating with other portfolios, passing legislation and providing a space to engage with civil society on matters of interest. Ms Semenya acknowledges components that still hinder women’s progress in society, like patriarchy, and importantly how to overcome these barriers through legislation and education across the gender divide to enable women to perform meaningful roles in society on an equal standing to their male counterparts.
