High Commissioner of Uganda, Barbara Nekesa Oundo

This week we talk to the High Commissioner of Uganda to South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe – Ms Barbara Nekesa Oundo about some of the priorities in her office, including an emphasis on commercial diplomacy to realise economic integration between the countries in her portfolio, in part through the alleviation of trade and infrastructure barriers to boost intra-Africa trade. High Commissioner Oundo acknowledges a few of Uganda’s interventions to promote female empowerment, such as its affirmative action provisions for women; allocating proportions of budgets to contribute to empowering women; developing gender sensitive policies and education initiatives for girls. We note that despite prevailing cultural, traditional and religious expectations of women, particularly in rural areas, through their perseverance and resilience women have the ability to succeed and demonstrate their capability.
