Pan African Parliament Member and Member of Parliament The Gambia: Fatou K. Jawara

This week on Womanity – Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to Pan African Parliament member and Member of Parliament of The Gambia, Fatou K. Jawara. In The Gambia she serves on the following committees: gender, health, women, children, disaster, humanitarian relief, defence and security, as well as the independent electoral commission’s ombudsman.  Some of her focal areas in relation to women encompass: supporting female farmers, striving for gender parity, increasing the representation of women across the spectrum – targeting 30%, and overcoming outdated thinking that relegates women to care giving roles.  She narrates some of her challenges in The Gambia’s political struggle which included imprisonment, torture and intimidation.

A few of her takeouts from the Pan African Parliament, which was held under the African Union’s theme for 2020: “Silencing the guns: creating conducive conditions for Africa’s development”, are to grow her knowledge base and implement procedures and sensitisation methods to combat issues raised by the conference.  Tune in for more…
