High Commissioner of New Zealand to South Africa – Sarah Lee

This week on Womanity – Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to the High Commissioner of New Zealand to South Africa – Sarah Lee. High Commissioner Lee shares some of the landmarks in her career and work being undertaken in the 12 African countries that fall into her current portfolio; and she emphasises the value of teams and how collective efforts deliver success. We highlight some of the empowerment projects that New Zealand is involved with in Africa, that aim to normalise women’s economic participation in the labour force as well as the idea that women should occupy leadership roles not just support functions. We reflect on some of the characteristics that women bring to leadership, such as good communication, compassion focus on family, healthcare and welfare. New Zealand has a history of women in prominent positions of leadership  and we remark on the positive role modelling effect this has for girls and women, encouraging them to be bold and ambitious, and we acknowledge that there are different ways of leading and different ways of following.
