International Women’s Day Gender Equality – Part 2

This week on Womanity-Women in Unity, we commemorate International Women’s Day, which is celebrated annually on the 8th of March. This year’s theme is Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.  The leaders featured in today’s compilation share their views on the significance of International Women’s Day and gender equality. In today’s compilation we hear from South Africa’s Ambassador to Switzerland Sankie Mthembi-Mahanyele who emphasizes the role of legislative frameworks for gender equality and monitoring of these instruments to help move women’s issues forward and crack glass ceilings. Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane advocates for reversing gender stereotypes to help level the playing field and urges women in the workforce to create their own table rather than waiting for a seat at an existing one. Canada’s Global Affairs Assistant Deputy Minister, Europe, Arctic, Middle East and Maghreb Sandra McCardell addresses possible actions to progress Goal 5 – Gender Equality of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and encourages women to believe in themselves, develop their education, become economically independent and embrace the sisterhood to help one another achieve our goals.
