Minister of Social Development South Africa: Bathabile Dlamini
This week we are joined by South Africa’s Minister of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini. We discuss the evolution of social development in South Africa to fight poverty, with initiatives like grants, accessible education, early childhood development and efforts to radically transform the lives of ordinary women who bear the brunt of poverty. The struggle for gender equality is multi-faceted – we raise practical gender issues of water and electricity provision, the importance of understanding legislation and making laws work in women’s favour, as well as the need for greater involvement from men in the common pursuit for gender equality. Additionally, we reflect on past gender achievements such as establishing the Commission on Gender Equality, 50:50 representation in the ANC and the Progressive Women’s Movement, and remark that for future progress women should be united in support of key issues. Tune in for more….
