Former Minister of Public Service & Administration; African Development Bank Special Envoy on Gender: Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi

This week we are joined by Ms Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi – African Development Bank Special Envoy on Gender (former Minister of Public Service and Administration & former Minister of Welfare and Population Development in the Republic of South Africa). We discuss past social injustices and the present struggle for economic development in Africa, as well as the need to overcome inequalities in society to ensure inclusive growth for men and women. To promote greater economic inclusion of women, criteria for finance applications should be re-evaluated, institutions should look more creatively and flexibly at what the asset base for women could be, not only fixed assets. Empirical evidence asserts that boards which include women yield greater profit margins. We discuss quotas as measures to breakthrough gender imbalances in the private sector and highlight empowerment legislation as a mechanism to create space for women in the private sector.
