Jamaica Minister Foreign Affairs & Foreign Trade: Kamina Johnson-Smith

This week in the first part of Womanity – Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to Ms Kamina Johnson-Smith the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade for Jamaica about some of her country’s foreign trade policies and domestic activities. We highlight, for example, interventions that have been implemented to allow for the re-integration of teen mothers into the school system, changing the narrative from a moralistic discussion to one of human rights and economic costs to the country. Minister Johnson-Smith remarks on positive outcomes of Jamaica’s national gender policy which led to Jamaica, per capita, having the highest number of female managers in the world. In the second part of the show we are joined by Ms Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah who is the Deputy Prime Minister of Namibia, as well as the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of Namibia, and Vice-President of Namibia’s ruling party SWAPO, who shares some of the programmes she has driven to advocate for women’s empowerment and rights in Namibia, including establishing the Ministry for Women and gender budgeting for each ministry to ensure that they consider how the outcomes of their budgets impact on the lives of women.
