This week on Womanity – Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to the Chairperson of the Multi-Party Women’s Caucus Portfolio Committee and member of parliament, Ms Nkhensani Bilankulu. The conversation includes the role of the committee as a body where women parliamentarians champion gender equality inside and outside parliament across racial and party lines, to serve as an advisory structure that represents the interests and concerns of women. We highlight some of the developments in the committee’s core focus areas of: Decriminalization of Sex Work; Women in Politics; Sanitary Dignity; Gender Based Violence and Femicide; Strengthening of the National Gender Machinery; the Re- introduction of Gender Responsive Budgeting (GRB); Building Relations with Stakeholders; and Women and Health. We consider some of the gaps in these areas and how to close them.  We discuss formal education to help advance women in the workplace and social education throughout communities to transform societal behaviour towards a more egalitarian society; and reflect on the responsibility that citizens have to one another to be the change they wish to see.
