Parliamentarian and Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs: Faith Muthambi

This week on Womanity – Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and member of parliament Ms Faith Muthambi, who previously served as Minister of Communications, and Minister of Public Service and Administration. We discuss the role that the Ministry of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs plays with respect to disaster management during the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa; highlighting two recent examples that require the portfolio committee’s oversight, specifically a R20billion relief package to distressed municipalities and effective communication to people living in rural areas to avoid misinformation about the coronavirus and the risk of stigmatization. We note that several female headed countries have successfully limited the spread of COVID-19, such as New Zealand, Finland, Germany and Taiwan, and remark on the value of female management characteristics in periods of crisis.
