The World Health Organisation’s Regional Director for Africa – Dr Matshidiso Moeti
This week on Womanity – Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, who is the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, and is the first woman to hold this appointment. Dr. Moeti reflects on a few of her career milestones which progressively established links between public health, illness and socio-economic status. We discuss universal health coverage as an important objective of the WHO and some of the work that drives this mandate. We consider prominent health concerns affecting women in Africa like maternal mortality, HIV, cervical cancer, obesity, mental health and gender based violence. We emphasise the importance of educating girls and women because of its transformative effects for themselves as individuals, for their families and for their nations’ overall well-being.
