Former CEO Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) – Nicky Newton-King

This week on Womanity-Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to Nicky Newton-King, who is the former CEO of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and spent over two decades with the JSE in various positions. She played prominent roles in the transformation and modernisation of the Exchange with respect to gender, race and technology. Diversity should be treated as a competitive advantage, not a scorecard tick. She championed the idea of businesses being socially responsible entities, driving a new consciousness about corporates and how they do business to move towards more conscious capitalism. Leadership brings immense responsibility but also opportunity to direct change; and being at the helm of the JSE, the voice of the regulator is heard more broadly, people listen more intently and respond more readily. More recently, Ms Newton-King has been involved in the WOZA Matrics TV program, which took the initiative to make quality education content freely available to high schoolers in 2020 where the COVID-19 pandemic drastically disrupted the school year.
