Mental Health Awareness with Psychiatrist Dr Lerato Dikobe-Kalane

This week on Womanity-Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to Dr. Lerato Dikobe-Kalane, a psychiatrist in private practice, about mental health. The theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day, on 10th October, was “Mental health care for all: let’s make it a reality”. In support of this worldwide campaign, we discuss diagnoses of mental health, together with treatment and access to care, which have been compounded by the Covid-19 pandemic. We note the impact of mental health on women in Africa, highlighting some of the conditions that women are more prone to – often stemming from hormonal factors. However, lockdowns and habit changes forced upon populations as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak, raised most people’s anxiety meters in response to our freedoms being taken away from us. Dr Dikobe-Kalane contrasts how the demeanour of women in medicine has changed over time with today’s cohort being confident in their own identity and embracing their femininity. Tune in for more…
