National Police Commissioner: Riah Phiyega

This week we speak to the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service Ms Mangwashi Victoria “Riah” Phiyega, the first woman to lead the police in its 100 year history. Our conversation covers women breaking glass ceilings in male dominated environments, occupying positions that were previously reserved for men and the effects these female role models have on opening greater possibilities for upcoming cohorts of women. We address aspect of gender parity in the South African Police Service throughout its ranks and the contributing role of institutional organizations like the Women’s Network towards gender development in South Africa as well as the SADC police services.
