South African Afrosoul Musician: Simphiwe Dana

This week we talk to South African Afrosoul Musician Simphiwe Dana. We discuss the inspiration behind her music and source of her longevity in the entertainment industry. Beyond music, Simphiwe Dana uses her voice to exercise change, as a social activist focused on education, the poor, the dispossessed and feminism. She shares her views on patriarchy as being heavily intertwined with culture and the need to overcome this mindset to further empower women. We also discuss her role as convenor of the African Union’s re-imagined creative hub that considers how arts, culture and heritage contribute to African Union’s Agenda 2063.
