Award winning musician and humanitarian Yvonne “Chaka Chaka” Mhinga

This week on Womanity-Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka catches up with one of the show’s former guests, renowned musician and humanitarian Yvonne “Chaka Chaka” Mhinga, who also received the Order of Ikhamanga for her contribution to music and social cohesion. We reflect on poignant moments in the early phase of her career, where art and music were forms of ammunition to fight against inequalities and conscientize the public about apartheid atrocities. She recalls receiving a note from former president Nelson Mandela and chewing it up through fear of being arrested by the special branch and reflects on the enduring support of Winnie Mandela. Freedom was hard won in South Africa, but it’s not our only fight; gender based violence, inequality, poverty and intolerance need to be overcome too. Yvonne Chaka Chaka uses her platforms for good, part of her humanitarian efforts includes serving as a Goodwill Ambassador for Malaria in Africa, this disease is one of the leading causes of death in the continent.  Tune in for more…
