Multi-award winning actress – Connie Chiume

This week on Womanity – Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to multi-award winning actress Connie Chiume, who was a nurse and a teacher before her acting career launched; her debut role being an international production with performances in Greece and Israel. We reflect on life in South Africa during the 70s and the restrictions she experienced from the apartheid system in comparison to the freedoms she enjoyed in countries that were not her own. We remark on some of the freelancing challenges actors encounter in South Africa, where the entertainment industry is substantially smaller than that of Britain and America, and as a result there are fewer opportunities. We note that the industry is still male dominated, particularly in executive positions and story lines tend to be written by men. We consider the need for greater unity amongst women to exert actions that cohesively transform the industry. Tune in for more…
